How to use QR Codes as a Photographer..

Posted by on February 27, 2012 with 9 Comments

Scan this code to be the first to be part of the new fabulous & free…

(You gotta Scan to find out!)

What is it?  You may have started to notice these on brochures and postcards, in magazine ads and on packaging. They’re called QR Codes and they are a 2 dimensional bar code that has been embedded with information such as a URL, text, coupons, special promotions & more! How do you read a QR Code? You read them with your smart phone by holding your camera up to the image while using a special QR code reader app. If you have a smart phone, just go into your app store and search QR reader. I downloaded the free app ‘QR Reader’ on my iPhone 4S. Once the app been installed onto your smart phone, you’ll be able to scan the code using your camera and import the embedded data, which will most likely be a URL linking you to a specific page. But it could also be contact information, coupons or a special message. (btw – the one up above has been linked with a special message by me!) How to Generate QR Codes? When cool new things begin emerging, try being one of the first to jump on board. It’s new and mysterious, so most people may just look at it and think ‘wow, she much be doing really good to have those,’ while others – the trendsetters – will be excited to get to use their fun new gadget with you. You can create your own FREE QR CODES through companies such as goqr and delivr and you can find many more with a simple Google search. How can QR Codes help your Photography Business?
  1. Create a video that tells about you and your business and have the URL point to the direct YouTube or Vimeo link!
  2. Create a Connection Card for Facebook Fan Page, Twitter and RSS Feeds with YouScan.me
  3. Place a QR Code in your studio waiting area and attach it to a fun puzzle or game for the kids!
  4. Direct the QR Code to a Free Photo that Clients can use as their Phone’s Wallpaper!
  5. Create a unique code for clients to be able to share sneak peeks with their friends and family!
  6. Create a QR Code to Direct People to sign up for your Email Newsletter!
  7. Use a QR code that links to your next mini session promotion!
  8. If you have a studio, you could have the code link to a map to direct people right to your studio address!
  9. Place the code on the back of a business card, postcard or brochure for a special offer or more information!
  10. Print the code on your business card to link it to your Facebook Fan Page!
What do you think? Going to try to use them? Have you already been scanning? Have more ideas on how to use them in your business? Leave a comment and share!

How to stop talking and start doing with SMART Goals..

Posted by on February 22, 2012 with 1 Comments
If only my office was in the shower…. I always get my most brilliant ideas in the shower. I’m like an idea factory when standing in that little box! Strategies, schemes and dreams flowing out as abundantly as the water that splashes down on my freshly conditioned head. Sometime I feel like Dug, the dog from Up… Because off I go in one determined and focused path until BAM — “Squirrel!” gets me again! I’m constantly working at and refining my abilities to stay on task and see my ideas and goals actually come to fruition. One way of doing this is through SMART Planning. S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for strategic and accountable goal planning. It’s a concept to help give specific direction to our vision. The concept: Be SMART and you will be able to set goals that are obtainable so you can see your success. Of course we all have the same goal in mind: To Be Successful! The flaw of that particular goal is being too broad. We have to remember all the little baby steps to earning the achievement. And perhaps even more important, to realize that what you measure as successful may not be what I measure as successful.

SMART

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Timely
The Take Away:
Your goals need to be Specific, Significant, and Simple. Make sure you can answer the common questions Who, What, When, Where, Why.
Can your goals be Measured? You need to have some idea of how much money, resources, or time it will take you. It will help you stay on track!
Set goals that are ambitious but Attainable. You need to know how to achieve it in order to own this concept.
Goals need to be Relevant in order to make them worthwhile.
Schedule Time frames and target dates. Tracking your progress will only lead you to success!
Now let’s look at our original goal: TO BE SUCCESSFUL! It’s much easier said than done right? You could break that down into categories. For example, maybe you’re asking, ‘what do I need to have a successful photography business?’
  1. Establish Clientele
  2. Functional Website
  3. Master Lighting & Posing
  4. Organize Office
  5. Get a New Lens
  6. Best way to have an ordering appointment
  7. Smooth Scheduling
So, with those you can just take one: BEST WAY TO HAVE AN ORDERING APPOINTMENT. It is a specific goal that you need to challenge with the w’s. Who will teach you about a successful ordering appointment? (Schedule coaching call with Leah!). What are the tools you will need? When do you want to implement this? Where will these take place?  And the why is fairly obvious; because you want to make money doing what you love! You can measure the goal by setting a timeline. When would you like to schedule your first ordering appointment? How much time will you need to prepare? Those factors will determine when you need to schedule your coaching call with me by! Make sure that the dates you set will be a reasonable time in the future. This specific goal is attainable and relevant right now and with the higher sales you would be able to work on other goals like #6. The New Lens! The final aspect of SMART Goals is to Evaluate and Reevaluate the goals you have set and the progress you are making. Let’s be SMART together and start setting goals that can help measure our success!

Simple Tips for Better Pet Photography..

Posted by on February 20, 2012 with 2 Comments
Pets are becoming part of the family photo more and more. I asked Claudine of Simply Dog Photography to share some tips and tricks to help us non pet experts create a better atmosphere and better portraits when Fido is with us. Pets can be challenging to photograph but with a little patience and effort, the end results are so worth it! I know that my clients have expressed on a number of occasions how much they truly appreciate my willingness to include the whole family!  1. Make sure to allow enough time to get to know the dog and allow them to get to know you. I never just go into a session without getting information beforehand on the dogs personality, what gets them excited and what they are afraid of. When I arrive I give the dog a few minutes to get to know me and build some trust by tossing a ball, playing with them and also let them get used to my gear.  I’ll even click my camera a few times to see how they react to the clicking sound, let them get used to it and see if they are nervous or camera shy. 2. Find out what excites them  (park, car ride, walk?)  and use those very sparingly. Many times people think constant squeaking from a toy will get attention but that will actually lose their interest faster than anything. However one well timed squeak or noise they have never heard before works perfect for expression. 3. Advise the owner to make sure they come to their session with their dog well exercised and a bit hungry. This will help them to respond to treats better (also treat sparingly). 4. Dogs have very short attention spans therefore I take a lot of breaks. We’ll take a few shots, play a bit, take a few more shots ect. 5. Let the dog get comfortable with their surroundings if it’s new to them and for the first few minutes just let them be. I find if I don’t allow them this time and the more they are forced into a position, the more difficult it becomes to get them to respond resulting in unnatural shots. Owners sometimes get nervous that their dogs aren’t doing “what they are supposed to” so it’s important that they know the more anxious they become, the more anxious the dog will become.  Just relax and go with it—pet sessions should be fun! 6.  Just like photographing small children approaching a pet photography session requires the same patience. I like to set up my pet shots just as I would with any subject but with pets expect to spend some time just waiting for that perfect moment. 7. For small dogs, it can work well to put them in or on something (a suitcase, couch ect.) For me since I shoot on location, things like park benches or inside a car are perfect! 8. Once they are comfortable, that is a great opportunity to get some great personality shots! Or bring in their  favorite toy to get play shots. 9. Let them be dogs! I love to shoot dogs in their natural environment where their personalities really come to life and if that means getting a little dirty—all the better! 10. This one’s from me (Leah)… Ask ahead of time to have your clients bring an extra special treat for the pooch. Don’t try to provide the treat yourself as the dog may have special diets or just might not be interested in what you have to offer. …Kids aren’t the only subjects we can bribe into good behavior. Have you been photographing pets in your family sessions? Leave a comment and let us know what tip you liked best and of course we’d love for you to add your own as well!

Q&A: The Welcome Packet..

Posted by on February 17, 2012 with 19 Comments
So much of what we do, is providing our clients with an experience. I believe that experience starts at DAY ONE, and that’s why I provide a welcome packet! It sets a very professional yet equally important, thoughtful tone. All the while, I’m able to get my clients all the necessary paperwork and information right away. Through the Welcome Packet, I am able to educate clients on what to expect from me and my business! This leads to a better more confident experience for them and less incoming questions which results in more time available for my family! Here are a few A’s to Q’s that you’ve sent me about my welcome packet and supplies so that if you haven’t already, you can get started on yours too! Can you please share how you put together a welcome kit for under $4? YES! The Welcome Packet consists of: A Presentation Folder with Rice Studio Supplies is $1.29 (found here). Then I have 6 Printed Letters on Linen Paper (Linen Paper is $.06 per sheet). I can print off my office printer or at Office Depot for like $0.18 cents. The brochure is Vista Print Tri Fold Brochure and it’s free, but after shipping and upload fees were $0.86 each. Then the magnet with Vista was Free but after s/h and upload was $0.24 cents each. Now I’m trying to think of what I’m forgetting but that only brings me to $3.47 per welcome packet!! Isn’t that awesome? Totally doable! Do you have any hints or tips on keeping your supplies stocked? I’m constantly running out and not having what I need. Do you buy enough to order at everything at once at the same time? Or is it all sporadic? I go through spurts. Sometimes I’m on top of it and sometimes I’m not. Maybe try creating a worksheet or a grease-board that has all the items you need to keep stocked! Keep it updated so that you know when you’re running low, or set calendar reminders to check inventory so many times a year. I really love how easy organization is with worksheets! Hey Leah, what do you include in your Welcome Packet? For Leah Remillet Photography, in the Welcome Packet I include:
  • Branded Folder
  • Welcome Letter
  • Contract
  • Model Release
  • What to Wear Brochure
  • Magnet
  • Business Card
  • Pricing Guide (collections only)
  • Ordering Appointment Guide with Dessert Menu on the back.
  • And on the top of the folder I write a hand written note with my branded sticky notes.
They are all in the Paysen Customizable Marketing Kit, found HERE (except Welcome Letter, What to Wear Guide & Ordering Appt. Guide). How do you get the VistaPrint items in your welcome kit for free? Once you order one thing (even a free thing!), they send you non-stop offers. I get e-mails what seems like daily offering all kinds of things for free and those items typically come up. I snatch up those deals – VistaPrint makes it pretty easy. Also just Google Vista Print coupons and you will find no shortage of deals to click through! Do you send out your welcome packet before or after your phone consultation? I send out the welcome packet once the session has been  schedule and only after the session fee payment has been collected. The session consultation most likely will happen afterwards. Having clients invest first makes them commit more to the process (anyone having a problem with cancellations or re-schedules, that’s your solution), and somehow taking a credit card number seems to legitimize my business in their eyes while making the transaction run much smoother and more efficient.

WE HAVE TWO GIVEAWAYS GOING RIGHT NOW!

Don’t forget to click-in to try to win one of 20 leather camera straps

and

Take one minute to get in on the BIG monthly giveaway!
